Foldables have moved from novelty to mainstream. Here is how the technology works, the trade-offs, and a buyer's checklist.
When the first mainstream foldable phones launched in 2019, they were expensive, fragile experiments. Several product generations later, foldables from multiple manufacturers are thinner, tougher and far more practical — and more brands are entering the category.
If you are considering a foldable, here is how the technology works and what to look for.
Open like a book to reveal a tablet-sized inner screen, with a regular phone-sized screen on the outside.
Best for: multitasking, reading, video, productivity.
Fold in half vertically, like classic flip phones, becoming compact and pocketable.
Best for: portability, style, hands-free selfies and quick glances at a cover screen.
Unlike LCDs, OLED panels produce their own light and can be built on flexible plastic substrates, allowing them to bend without breaking.
Early foldables used plastic covers that scratched easily. Most now use ultra-thin glass — glass thin enough to flex — topped with a protective layer.
The hinge is the engineering heart of a foldable. Modern hinges:
Because the screen bends repeatedly in the same place, a visible crease can form. It is generally less noticeable on newer models, especially when viewing the screen head-on.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Larger screen in a pocketable size | Higher prices than similar non-foldables |
| Excellent for multitasking and media | More delicate inner screen |
| Flex modes for video calls and photos | Visible crease on many models |
| Distinctive design | Repairs can be expensive |
| Improving software support | Often smaller batteries or compromises on cameras |
A foldable's value depends heavily on software:
Good fit:
Maybe not:
They are more durable than early models but still more delicate than standard phone screens, especially the inner display.
No, but on newer models it is often less noticeable during normal use.
With careful use, a modern foldable can last several years. Hinge wear and screen damage are the main risks.
For people who value a larger screen in a compact device, they increasingly are. For budget-conscious buyers, conventional phones still offer better value.
Foldable phones are no longer just a futuristic gimmick. They offer genuinely new ways to use a phone — but they still involve trade-offs in price, durability and repairability. Match the design to how you actually use your phone, and a foldable can be a smart choice.
