Hundreds of millions of Indians search in their own languages. Here is a technical and content playbook for reaching them.
India's internet has become multilingual. A growing share of new internet users prefer to consume content in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujarati and other languages. Google has expanded AI-powered search experiences, including AI Mode, to Hindi and other languages, and voice search in Indian languages continues to grow.
Yet many Indian websites still publish only in English. That leaves a large opportunity for businesses willing to invest in multilingual SEO done properly.
Before translating anything, identify where demand exists:
Start with one or two languages that match your market rather than launching ten at once.
Indian search behaviour is diverse:
| Search style | Example |
|---|---|
| Native script | सस्ता होम लोन |
| Transliterated (Romanised) | sasta home loan |
| Code-mixed (Hinglish) | best home loan kaise le |
| English | cheapest home loan India |
Your content strategy should reflect how your audience searches. In many categories, Romanised and code-mixed queries are common, especially on mobile.
Use separate URLs for each language version. Common options:
example.com/hi/, example.com/ta/ — easy to manage and consolidates authorityhi.example.com — more separation, more setupAvoid showing different languages at the same URL based on cookies or browser settings; search engines may not see all versions.
hreflang tells search engines which language version to show users. For India, use language codes such as:
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-IN" href="https://example.com/" />
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="hi-IN" href="https://example.com/hi/" />
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="ta-IN" href="https://example.com/ta/" />
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="x-default" href="https://example.com/" />Rules to remember:
Machine translation is a useful starting point but rarely enough for ranking content.
Low-quality auto-translation at scale can be treated as unhelpful content.
For businesses with physical locations:
Voice queries are longer and more conversational. AI search engines favour content that answers questions clearly. For each language version:
If your audience searches that way, yes — especially in titles, FAQs and conversational content.
It can help, but important pages should be reviewed and localised by native speakers for quality.
Choose based on your customers and search data. Hindi has the largest audience, but a regional business may benefit more from its local language.
It helps search engines show the right language version to the right users, which improves relevance and user experience.
The next wave of Indian internet growth is happening in Indian languages. Businesses that combine careful technical SEO with genuine localisation can reach audiences that English-only competitors are missing.
