Rankings alone no longer tell the full story. Here is how to track whether AI search engines mention, cite and send traffic to your brand.

For twenty years, SEO success was measured with a familiar trio: rankings, clicks and organic sessions. AI-powered search has broken that model.
When Google answers a question with an AI Overview, when AI Mode holds a multi-turn conversation, or when a chatbot recommends three brands in a single reply, your content may influence the answer without ever earning a click. In September 2026 alone, Google pushed AI Mode deeper into AI Overviews and added link carousels for developing stories — a reminder that the interface keeps moving.
This guide sets out a measurement framework you can use today.
The goal is not to abandon classic metrics, but to add a new layer.
Track whether your brand, product or domain appears in AI-generated answers for a defined set of prompts.
How: Build a list of 50–200 prompts that reflect real customer questions. Check them on a fixed schedule across Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and major assistants. Record whether you appear.
Metric: Mention rate = prompts where you appear ÷ total prompts tracked.
Being mentioned is good; being cited with a link is better, because it creates a path to your site and signals trust.
Metric: Citation share = your cited links ÷ all cited links for the prompt set.
AI answers can describe your brand inaccurately or unfavourably. Log whether descriptions are:
Connect AI visibility to:
A strong prompt set mirrors how people actually ask questions.
| Prompt type | Example |
|---|---|
| Definitional | "What is programmatic advertising?" |
| Comparison | "Best project management tools for small teams" |
| Problem-solving | "How do I reduce website bounce rate?" |
| Local | "Best digital marketing agency in Pune" |
| Branded | "Is [brand] good for small businesses?" |
Tips:
Manual tracking works for small prompt sets and gives rich qualitative insight, but it is slow and affected by personalisation.
Automated tools can track hundreds of prompts over time. Evaluate them on:
Whichever you choose, keep the method consistent. AI answers vary, so trends matter more than single snapshots.
Measurement is only useful if it guides action. Content that tends to be cited shares several traits:
Google includes AI feature traffic in the standard Performance report, but it is not always separated out. Many teams infer impact by tracking cited pages and query patterns.
Monthly is a good baseline. For fast-moving industries or news, weekly checks are better.
No. Strong SEO foundations — crawlability, quality content, authority — remain the basis for being cited in AI answers.
Generative systems can vary responses by wording, location, time and personalisation. That is why consistent sampling and trend analysis matter.
AI search has added a new question to every SEO report: "Did the AI trust us enough to use us?" Teams that measure presence, citation, accuracy, traffic and outcomes will be able to answer it — and to prove the value of content in a search world that no longer revolves around ten blue links.
